Singapore is known internationally as a clean and fine garden city. Our country is often cited as the Garden of Eden where the streets are always void of litter. So this story must come as a shock, even for us Singaporeans.

On 28 August 2009 Friday afternoon about 5pm, more than a thousand cockroaches suddenly appeared from the dustbin chutes of a residential estate in Jurong East, Street 24, Block 252, Singapore.

The shop owners of the area, including a employees of a hair dressing salon and a newspaper uncle, jumped to action and worked with a cleaner to exterminate the roaches. They managed to clear the messy infestation after 2 long hours.

Ms Tan, the owner of the hair dressing salon, revealed that this happened about 4 or 5 years ago in the same area too.

I hope that the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA) will do something about this. I had heard of similar incidents happening in Punggol a couple of years back as well.
