“Ah Nan” John Cheng Say Sorry for Remarks About Women

J Team’s John Cheng You Nam (钟耀南) “Ah Nan”

Ah Nan is a talented artiste from Jack Neo’s J Team who is often portrayed as a Hokkien-sprouting gangster or common man in his TV shows and movies. A few days ago at the height of Jack Neo’s affair scandal with mistress Wendy Chong, Ah Nan had this to say:

“Singapore is a liberal society and it is normal for men to fool around and have affairs. The difference is that other men are better at hiding their indiscretions better (compared to Jack Neo). Irene Kng (Jack Neo’s wife) is like Singapore’s Lin FengJiao (Jackie Chan’s wife)…”

“在我们新加坡那么开放的社会，男人玩女人是很正常的，只是他们偷吃的比较‘干净’，Irene（梁太太)就像是狮城林凤娇…”

In Ah Nan’s eagerness to defend his good friend and mentor, Jack Neo, he offended many people in Singapore with these insensitive remarks. Many people and groups including the women’s advocacy group, AWARE, criticised and condemned Ah Nan’s words.

Ah Nan had follow-up with an interview with the local newspapers and clarified that his statement was actually quoted out of context. Nevertheless, Ah Nan apologised to all the women who might have been offended by his offending remarks.
