Did Gopalan Nair Lie About MM Lee Kuan Yew’s Heart Attack on His Blog?

What Gopalan Nair is Saying About Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore

Gopalan Nair is a rather controversial ex-Singaporean who declares himself as a Singapore dissident who relinquished his Singapore citizenship in 2005 because he “was not prepared to permit Lee Kuan Yew to unjustly retain [his] CPF funds if [he] remained [a] Singapore Citizen”. He stated on his blog that he had left for USA, obtained asylum and was admitted to the California State Bar, which allowed him to practice law in Fremont California near San Francisco.

Two days ago, for reasons unknown to others, Gopalan Nair decided to declare on his website that our 87 year old Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew had suffered a massive heart attack on 5 March 2010 at 9.34 pm Singapore time.

Gopalan Nair claimed that MM Lee was reported to be presently in the Intensive Care Cardiac Unit of the Singapore General Hospital under sedation and respiration, carefully watched by a team of doctors, with the current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is also his son, and his 2 other children beside him. Gopalan Nair also said that it is uncertain if he can recover at his age, and the pacemaker which he has in his heart is believed to have contributed to it.

He went on to suggest that there is a climate of fear among business leaders and bankers because of their lack of confidence in MM Lee’s son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s capacity to govern. He further asserted that there were reports that some investors have already started transferring their funds overseas creating a fear there could be a run on the banks.

Gopalan further suggested that there were reports of small pockets of peaceful protesters and demonstrations at the Geylang and Mountbatten Road junction and the Orchard Road and Patterson Road.

He said that the situation is very fluid and he will be reporting on the situation as it unfolds. He claimed that there have been numerous telephone calls to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Singapore’s newspaper The Straits Times for information.

My Thoughts on Rumours about Minister Mentor Lee’s Serious Health Condition

I personally think that groundless and baseless allegations which are not supported by published facts should never be perpetuated. I do not normally touch on politics on Wayang Times but I just have to voice out this time round as Mr Lee Kuan Yew is my Singapore idol. I sincerely hope that Mr Lee Kuan Yew is currently healthy, alive and kicking.

Update (8 March 2010): Gopalan Nair has admitted to faking the news of Lee Kuan Yew’s heart attack on his blog.
