Japan’s 100Mbps Internet Broadband Telco Pwned Starhub / Singtel

It appears that Japan is offering the citizens cool 100Mbps Internet broadband connections at a mere US$11 (~ S$15) per month. According to Boing Boing, some users experienced uncapped connection with an average of 64Mbps for download and 55Mbps for upload.
Compared to Singapore, we have Starhub and Singtel, the 2 largest companies that offers the public Internet broadband connection, at much higher prices. Comparing both companies’ fastest broadband plans, Starhub offers their MaxOnline Ultimate Plan [1] at download speeds of 100Mbps but upload speeds of a laughable 10Mbps for S$124.12 (~ US$89). Singtel offers their 15Mbps Unlimited Plan [2] for S$64.90 (~ US$47).
In other words, we pay Starhub S$124.12 for 100Mbps when we can get similar download speeds but better upload speeds in Japan for only $15, or 88% cheaper. We pay Singtel $64.90 for 15Mbps, when we can get much faster speeds in Japan for 77% cheaper. This is why I say [*] that Japan’s Internet broadband Telco pwned Starhub and Singtel’s broadband plans.

The logic is simple. The Singapore market is too small, so there’s no economy of scale. We will never get this kind of prices in Singapore unfortunately.
