Liu Bo Lin The Invisible Chinese Artist Man Who Camouflage in Paintings

Liu Bolin is a young Beijing based artist who has exhibited primarily in China until last year’s solo show at
Paris’ Galerie Bertin Toublanc and a group show with the gallery in Miami. He recently finished up a show
at Eli Klein fine art in New York showcasing a variety of his pieces including some form the series
‘camoflague’. This series is an exploration of human nature and animal instincts which features Chinese
citizens painted to blend into their surroundings. The subjects are covered head to toe in paint,
camouflaging themselves in front of the Chinese flag, a billboard or as part of the landscape in downtown Beijing.
Borned in 1973, the 35-year-old native from Shandong, China, manages to camouflage his subjects in any surroundings, no matter how difficult they might be. Liu Bolin works on a single photo for up to 10 hours at a time, to make sure he gets it just right, and most of the time he achieves the right effect. There are many passers-by who won’t realize he is there and would often get a scare when he moves.
The talented Liu Bolin said that his art is a protest against the actions of the Chinese Government, who allegedly shut down his art studio in 2005 and persecutes other Chinese artists. Therefore his art is about not fitting into modern society. Despite the problems he faces with the Chinese authorities, Liu’s works are appreciated at an international level.
