The Merlion (鱼尾狮) is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name combines “mer” meaning the sea and “lion”. The fish body comes from Singapore’s ancient name back when it was a fishing village — Temasek — meaning “sea town” in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore’s original name — Singapura — meaning “lion city” or “kota singa” in Sanskrit and Malay.
The symbol was designed by Mr Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997. The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol since 20 July 1966. Although the STB changed their logo in 1997, the STB Act continues to protect the Merlion symbol. Approval must be received from STB before it can be used. The Merlion appears frequently in STB-approved souvenirs.

after i watch some of the videos, im quite surprised they dont choose oxy ong.. she have the looks, she have the body and most importantly she have the brain.. im a foreigner and i have more correct answer for simple question abt spore compare to pillar.. and oxy ong got it all right.. pillar got the second chance.. not many ppl can get that.. hope she use it well.. tho i still prefer oxy ong.. but may be there is a reason for this.. oya, want to mention oso that oxy ong got the lowest internet vote (only 330 vote).. seems like she really compete in a fair way.. it is too easy to cheat for online vote..
susan, i agree with u too! i thought she has great poise! unfortunately, i guess for certain contests, u need more than good looks and poise to win. probably other x-factors are needed as well.
In the first place I don’t see why is there a need to know about the Merlion when it’s a a mystical crap looking douche clown. As a staff at Sentosa and going in and out of it more then any other Singaporean, I myself do not know when it extinct? First of all did it even exist? NO! So what’s the point of asking someone something random out of the blue? FYI Oxy or whatever her name is has no nose bone just like every other Chinese and ching eyes. So Pilar FTW!! @ Susan everyone competed fairly, are you trying to say that Pilar cheated?
I for one am deeply horrified by the standard of english our nation’s representatives have. But after reading some replies on this site, I’m even more tragically amused that the critics here have an even worse command of english. I’ve travelled the world being proud of representing my country in my own way but sad to say, the organisers of miss world spore dont share that same pride thus sending out misrepresentations of our very cosmopolitant nation. We tragically will effectively be telling the world in south africa come december that this is the best sporean girl Singapore can produce. The best course of action now would jus be to pull out. Oh god I hope this comes true cos for all the MOE and worked for, this is definately gonna destroy it.
