Romanian Embassy Diplomat Dr Silviu Ionescu Will Not Return to Singapore after Hit-and-Run Incident

The Romanian Diplomat, Dr Silviu Ionescu is currently a suspect in a hit-and-run accident case in Singapore. He has told the media that he will not to Singapore.

The case

The traffic accident which occured on 15 Dec 2009, allegedly may have involved Dr Silviu Ionescu. Dr Silviu Ionescu’s embassy car, an Audi A6, has been identified as the one which hit 2 pedestrians at about 3 am that day. Instead of stopping to help, the “unidentified” driver had drove away and again hit another pedestrian just a short distance away. Again the driver did not stop and continue to drive off.

At about the same time, Dr Silviu Ionescu called the police to report that his car is “missing”. He had claimed that after going to a KTV (during which he did not drink any alcohol), he had returned and parked the car outside the Romanian embassy. Dr Silviu Ionescu also said that he had a set of spare car keys in the glove compartment.

On the same day around noon time, the police called him to inform him that his car was found abandoned at a office building in the Sungei Kadut area, with the front bumper dented and driver-side widescreen smashed.

The plot thickens when a taxi driver revealed that he had picked up Dr Silviu Ionescu at between 3 am – 3.30 am on 15 Dec in the Sungei Kadut area, after Dr Ionescu had flagged him down.

There were also witnesses who claimed that a Korean woman was seen in his car around the time of the incident.

A few days later, Dr Silviu Ionescu quietly left Singapore and returned to Romania, supposedly to seek medical treatment for diabetes.

In an earlier statement to the media, he had mentioned that he will return to Singapore to assist in investigations after his treatment. But yesterday, he claimed his statement had been misunderstood. Instead, he explained that he would not be returning since he had been recalled from his post in Singapore. However, he would assist in the investigations from his homecountry in Romania.
