Some of you have asked me what is this long story which got Dr Joseph Ong Chor Teck embroiled in the tussle between Temasek Review and Temasek Holdings. Well, read the letters below for a better understanding.

Dear Dr Ong,

Dear Sir/Madam,

We refer to the 9 October 2010 edition of The New Paper on the so-called “Temasek Review” website.
On 15 Oct 2010, we wrote to Dr. Joseph Ong on the matter. Dr. Ong replied he has nothing to do whatsoever with the website, and asked that we write to you instead. Accordingly, we have asked Dr. Ong to send this letter to you.

The purpose of this letter is to request that you, as the owner/s of the website and/or domain name/s, stop using the good name of “Temasek Review” and that the name be changed.

As is well known, Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited (“Temasek”) has been using the name “Temasek Review” for our annual performance review reports since 2004. Electronic versions of the Temasek Review reports also appear on our company website. The Temasek Review is meant for Temasek to share and review our performance annually with our Singapore as well as international stakeholders. The name “Temasek Review” has become well known and is indisputably associated with Temasek.

It also appears from the report that sometime in 2009, a decision was made to change the name of the website from “The Wayang Party” to the “The Temasek Review”.

According to the website, its aim is “To provide space for columnists and reader comments from across the political spectrum to foster, facilitate and promote serious debate and discourse ….” and to provide “coverage on socio-political affairs of Singapore.”

However, it appears that this has been done by capitalizing on the good will and reputation of our “Temasek Review” for the website in place of its original name. This is misleading and irresponsible.
The website also claims that its editorial position is based, among other things, “on the principles of transparency, accountability and responsibility…”.

It should live up to its own words and do the responsible thing to change the name of the website and/or domain name, and not misuse “Temasek Review” for your purpose.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Goh Yong Siang
Senior Managing Director
Head, Strategic Relations

Dear Dr Ong,

The 9 October 2010 edition of The New Paper reported that you informed the police that you are the founder of the so-called “Temasek Review” website.

The purpose of this letter is to request, if you are the founder of the website, that the website stops using the good name of “Temasek Review” and that its name be changed.

As is well known, Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited (“Temasek”) has been using the name “Temasek Review” for our annual performance review reports since 2004. The Temasek Review is meant for Temasek to share and review our performance annually with our Singapore as well as international stakeholders. According to the website, its aim is “To provide space for columnists and reader comments from across the political spectrum to foster, facilitate and promote serious debate and discourse ….” and to provide “coverage on socio-political affairs of Singapore.”

Temasek has no issue with the desire to foster and facilitate serious debate and discourse and to provide news of socio-political affairs of Singapore. That is the right of every Singaporean.

However, it appears that this has been done by capitalizing on the good will and reputation of our “Temasek Review” for the website in place of its original name. This is misleading and irresponsible.
The website also claims that its editorial position is based, among other things, ” on the principles of transparency, accountability and responsibility…”.

It should live up to its own words and do the responsible thing to change the name of the website, and not misuse “Temasek Review” for the website.

Thank you.

Video: SMRT Love Your Ride Music Jingle by Dim Sum Dollies

The Dim Sum Dollies are a Singaporean musical cabaret group comprised of Selena Tan, Emma Yong and Pamela Oei. The Dim Sum Dollies are well known for their loud and colourful dressings, fun dance scenes and their comical but incisive approach to contemporary social issues in Singapore.

In 2010, the Public Transport Council, in partnership with the Land Transport Authority, SMRT, SBS Transit, the Singapore Kindness Movement, and the Dim Sum Dollies came together to promote the Singapore Kindness Movement. This campaign strives to promote gracious behaviour on our buses and trains, in line with our aim to be a more gracious society.

The slogan for this year’s programme is “Love Your Ride” or “有爱心,多开心”. To inject a fun and humourous element to the programme, popular and recognisable local icons, Dim Sum Dollies were roped in as the programme ambassadors. Through this music video, the Dollies sing, dance and rap to urge commuters to queue and allow commuters to alight first, move in to the center of the train cars or the rear of buses, and give up your seat to those in need.

To learn more about the programme, please visit www.publictransport.sg.

Enjoy their cute video below.

Dim Sum Dollies “Love Your Ride” Music Video MTV Jingle

A little bit about the Dollies:

The trio began in 2002 with a gig at the Esplanade called A Single Woman. 2003 saw them perform to a sold-out crowd in the immensely well-received Steaming!, which was followed by Revenge of the Dim Sum Dollies in 2004, Dim Sum Dollies: Singapore’s Most Wanted in 2005, and Dim Sum Dollies: The History of Singapore! in 2007. In 2006, they lent their names to Glen Goei’s adaptation of the off-Broadway musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors performed at Victoria Theatre.

According to local director Ivan Heng, the name ‘Dim Sum Dollies’ was chosen because dim sum “came in threes, each morsel painstakingly prepared to please eye and palate”. This description describes the trio’s presentation style on stage, which combines visually-spectacular sets and costumes with an original take on all things Singaporean.

PAP-Government 1, Temasek Review 0

Most of my readers would know that I don’t dabble in political stuff on my blog. But I just could not resist to make the dig: PAP-led Government 1, Temasek Review 0.

For the more politically attuned netizens or the Singaporeans who have been following the news, you would probably have read about the little tussle Temasek Review had with the SPH (The New Paper) journalist and Temasek Holdings.

If I remember correctly, it goes something along the line of Temasek Review was asked by Temasek Holdings to change their website and domain names, as the “Temasek Review” name was used by Temasek Holdings all this while for their annual reports. However Temasek Holdings choose to make the request through Dr Joseph Ong Chor Teck, the last known founder/ owner of the Temasek Review website. And somehow The New Paper came into the picture and reported interesting details about Dr Joseph Ong, details which were allegedly confidential and only known to the Singapore Police. The Singapore Police happened to be interviewing Dr Joseph Ong for an unrelated incident involving some other political demonstration he was making.

To cut the long story short, Temasek Review agreed in principle to change their site name though not admitting any wrongdoing. Their excuse was that they would rather remain anonymous and did not want to be dragged into a potentially long-drawn and costly legal tussle. The Temasek Review domain was sold for US$1 to a supposedly non-Singaporean woman.

Well, I think the story have not ended yet as they have yet to move their site to a new domain.

But personally, I think that Temasek Review is not as balanced as they claimed. They appear to report tons of rather biased stories which simply took the opposite stance of mainstream newspapers such as Straits Times. They are also highly critical of the PAP-led Government for every single thing. Plus, their new look is really ugly.

You could check it out for some doses of fun read but I would not recommend my readers to take them seriously. At least not yet, till they truly live up to their mission to provide “an independent, balanced and unbiased coverage on socio-political affairs in Singapore.”

And if you really want to read cynical stuff that is critical of every thing, try reading my favourite comic strip Dilbert instead.

PS: It was not my intention to provide a professionally written unbiased article. This is just a rant which I thought was pretty balanced and fair.

Police Arrested 4 Guys Who Attacked Darren Ng at Downtown East

In the latest news, it was reported that the Singapore Police managed to make significant progress with the arrest of 4 suspects, aged 18 to 20 years old. These guys are suspected to be 4 of the original 5 who made the attack at Downtown East, which resulted in the departure of the 19 years old Darren Ng Wei Jie.

The super efficient Singapore Police were able to make the arrests within 48 hours because they had spent 2 sleepless nights on all possible leads and conducted intensive investigations. The CCTV video feeds provided by the Downtown East management had revealed valuable information about the suspects as well.

NTUC Downtown East is an entertainment hub located in Pasir Ris, Singapore. Other than F&B and shopping, it hosts other entertainment features such features arcades, Wild Wild Wet a water park and the Escape Theme Park an amusement park. It can be found via Google map as seen below:

Video: Darren Ng Wei Jie Tribute from His Republic Poly Friends

The poor Darren Ng Wei Jie who was set upon by 5 other gangsters at Downtown East is remembered in this tribute by his Republic Polytechnic good friends.

The video is a nice collection of the photos and pictures of the happier times Darren Ng spent with his friends.

Newspaper reports had indicated that Darren Ng may look aloof but is actually a kind-hearted young man who opens up when you get to know him. Unfortunately, fate played such a cruel joke on him and his family.

Pasir Ris Darren Ng was Attacked by Hooligans, Not Ah Bengs

I was saddened to read about the news of what happened to the 19 years old Darren Ng Wei Jie on 31 Oct 2010 Halloween at Downtown East Pasir Ris. The young Republic Polytechnic student was attacked by another group of 5 hooligan teenagers in bright day light.

The incident was allegedly triggered when Darren Ng and his friends got into a “staring” incident with a group of hooligans in the Downtown East MacDonald’s. Eye witnesses said that the group of hooligans had followed Darren Ng and his two friends out of the fast food restaurant and set upon them at the grass patch outside. Unfortunately, the verbal fight soon turned to become physical. The hooligans were heard to have shouted some possibly secret society-related slogans after the knives fight and ran off. Darren Ng passed on 5 hours later in Changi Hospital.

Some online netizens have called those attackers Ah Beng. But I disagree. As explained by Mark Lee in the below Omy video, there is a distinct difference between Hooligans and Ah Bengs. According to his definition, Hooligans are the ones who will hang out at coffee shops when they are free and get into trouble, while the Ah Bengs only hang out at coffee shops and watch the trouble brewing.

My condolences for the family. I hope the hooligans will soon be caught. Anyone with information may call the police at 1800-255-0000.

Gary Ng Arrested by Singapore Police, Plus a Video Interview by Straits Times

Alas, Singapore’s very own Edison Chen, Mr Gary Ng, has been arrested by the police. The mysterious Gary Ng, who said that his name “Gary” stands for “Girls Always Remember You”, shot to infamy in 2009 when he began to distribute his videos on the Internet.

He claimed on Internet forums such as HWZ and SBF that the girlfriends in the videos include students from the local polytechnics and universities, beer promoters, Shenton Way workers, his first cousin, and a mother and daughter. The news back then amazed by netizens in the region and many openly denounced his actions.

The 28 years old Gary Ng was finally caught by the police when a woman whom he befriended reported him to the police. According to the local tabloids, Gary Ng was caught rummaging through the belongings of the girl and trying to steal her valuables. When found out, Gary Ng had allegedly threatened to reveal the name and address of the woman on the Internet as he had also seen her NRIC details. There were also allegations that Gary Ng, a bachelor who works in the oil industry, had cheated other women of their money in previous occasions.

Police has arrested Gary Ng, but you can view his video interview with Razor TV below

In a previous interview with Straits Times’ Razor TV, Gary Ng claimed that he created the videos to help him get over his previous relationships with his ex-girlfriends, who had allegedly cheated on him.
