Rumour of Lee Kuan Yew Heart Attack is a Hoax by Gopalan Nair

Gopalan Nair Explains Why He Lied About Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s Heart Attack Rumour

In my previous post, I asked if Gopalan Nair lied by spreading rumours about MM Lee Kuan Yew’s “massive heart attack” on his blog. Well, it appeared that it is a deliberate hoax to scam people after all.

Gopalan Nair stated in his blog (March 07, 2010, 1715 hrs, Pacific Standard Time) that his blog post “was a deliberate attempt to highlight how tenuous Singapore really is, with all power in the island vested in one man, and the dire consequences to the island of his parting. And especially so as [Lee Kuan Yew] is 87″.

Gopalan Nair appeared gratified that he had received no less than 40 comments to the fake news on LKY. In fact he claimed that the Singapore General Hospital had its security tightened and that the Singapore’s stock market exchange is keeping a watch on developments. In his mind, the Singapore Dissident thinks that this “overwhelming reaction is characteristic not among the democracies of the world which can weather the death of anyone but of Stalinist dictatorships”.

Strangely, Gopalan Nair claimed that Singapore’s ex-Attorney General Mr Walter Woon Seong Ming was sacked.

Despite the wild claims about Mr Lee Kuan Yew suffering from a heart attack by Gopalan Nair earlier, he was confident that while none of it is true, the scenario that he painted assuming that Lee Kuan Yew dies is completely correct.

He went on to suggest that Singaporeans should either protest the current system, or pack up and quit Singapore and fly to Australia or some other “safer country”.

While Gopalan Nair was not sorry for deliberately fabricating the news about Lee Kuan Yew’s health condition, he seemed pretty sure that based on what he has been advised that, Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, “as is the custom of Stalinist strongmen around the world, will either sue me or if he cannot do it, shoot me”.

Should Anyone Spread Fake Rumours About Our Politicians’ such as Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s Health Condition?

Personally, I think it is wrong to be creating and spreading rumours or falsehoods for whatever reason. This is especially if it can cause panick in a country. As mentioned previously, groundless and baseless allegations which are not supported by published facts should never be perpetuated.

I saw the blog on “Singapore Dissident” and I noted 2 very interesting things.

    1) 23 comments posted, not 40.

    2) Blog Moderation was enabled, this means only posts approved by the blob owner will be put up, and there was a surprising lack of conflicting viewpoints in the comments. :) Is the pot calling the kettle black? Censorship!! Censorship!! lol

On a more serious note, that was a really stupid move by Nair, those that released their holdings on the market can sue him senseless, not to mention newspapers that reported it can sue him for ruining their reputation. He’ll definately try to skate out under “they should check their info”, but seriously doubt he’ll get far.

And I still find the double standards of censorship funny :)
